What is Autónomotools, in one sentence?
Autónomotools is a platform full of helpful tools and resources for the self-employed (autónomos) in Spain.
Who is this for? Do I need to be an autónomo already?
It is for anyone registered as autónomo in Spain, and for anyone seriously considering it. You do not need an account, a card or a gestor to start.
I am thinking about going autónomo but have not registered yet. Is this useful to me?
Yes - many calculators were made with you in mind! They work with figures you make up as easily as on real ones, so you can find out what a given income would leave you before you commit to anything.
Does this work for autónomos societarios (company owners)?
You can calculate your personal social security burden and estimate your year-end debt, as well as calculate your personal income tax, as an autónomo societario.
The more specialized tools like the price calculator work only for regular autónomos.
I am a "false autónomo" / I only invoice one client. Does anything here change for me?
You can use all the tools like everyone else. We will have helpful resources for your specific situation in the future.
I live outside Spain but invoice Spanish clients. Is this relevant?
These tools are all based on you being registered as autónomo (self-employed) in Spain. They do not work for people whose business is based somewhere else.
I am on the Beckham law / a special regime. Do your calculators apply?
The income tax calculator does not currently apply to Beckham law workers - coming soon.
You can use all the other tools and set the switch from „net“ to „gross“ to still see your income, expenses, and social security burden and then calculate the tax burden yourself.
Who built this, and why should I listen to them?
Pekka is a web developer and designer who has been autónomo in Spain since 2018 and got stubborn about understanding the rules himself. He became so good at it that he is now a respected mentor in several autónomo self-help forums. Learn more about him on the "about" page.
Where do your figures come from?
From the primary sources: the BOE, AEAT's Manual práctico de Renta, the Seguridad Social's own tables, and each comunidad autónoma's published scale. You will find links to the original sources across the site.
How current are the rates? What year do the calculators use?
The current year, by default, and you can pick another one where a tool supports it. Rules are versioned per year, so a 2026 calculation keeps using the 2026 rules after 2027 arrives.
The Seguridad Social simulator gives me a different number. Who is right?
Usually neither, exactly. The official simulator asks for a contribution base and we work out which base your earnings put you in, so the two agree once the same base goes into both. If they still differ, tell us! That is a bug worth knowing about.
My gestor gives me a different number. Who is right?
Your gestor, if it comes to a decision that matters. They know things about you that a form does not ask, and they potentially carry liability. What we can do is show you how a number is built, so you can ask them a sharper question. Every calculation comes with a "show calculation logic" link which you can share. Should the gestor claim there is a mistake in our calculations, please let us know!
What exactly is not included in the calculations?
We completely ignore IVA (and IGIC in Canarias) because those are "zero-sum" taxes for the autónomo: what they pay in IVA they get back from the tax office, what they charge in IVA they have to forward to the tax office. What's also not included is anything that depends on your particular history rather than this year's figures: carried-forward losses, unusual deductions, and whatever your previous years did to your situation.
Do you handle regional (comunidad autónoma) IRPF scales?
Yes. The autonomic half of IRPF uses your region's own scale, and each region's scale is versioned per year, because several of them change their rates in November or December for the year that is already running.
Do you cover the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla?
Yes, including their own IRPF scales.
Do you handle the annual regularización (what happens when my real income differs from my declared bracket)?
Yes. That is what the social security debt tool (coming soon) is for: it takes what you have paid so far against what you are actually earning and estimates what Seguridad Social will ask for, or hand back, when they square it up.
Do your numbers account for deductions I can claim (family, disability, pension plans)?
You can select some of the most important ones in the tax profile: children, other dependants and the personal circumstances that move your mínimo personal y familiar. You may have further more specialized deductions which are not included here.
What happens to my saved calculations when the rates change for a new year?
Nothing. A calculation is saved for the year it was made for and keeps its own rules, so last year's answer stays last year's answer. Run it again against the new year to see what changed.
I found a mistake in a calculation. How do I report it?
Please do, and thank you. Use the contact form, or leave a comment on the tool itself, and say which figures you entered (or share the "show calculation logic" link with us). Anything you report to us will be handled securely and discreetly, based on our privacy policy.
Is Autónomotools a substitute for a gestor?
No, and we're not trying to be. The numbers presented here are for orientation and financial education. The calculators have been painstakingly tested, but they can still contain mistakes. They are not professional advice. Autónomotools was not programmed by a licensed gestor. Do talk to a licensed professional before making any life-changing decisions.
I need urgent help dealing with the tax office or Seguridad Social. Can you help me?
Usually, unfortunately, no: we are not licensed gestors or lawyers, and you may need to talk to such a person. For general English-language help and recommendations we recommend the Autónom@s & self-employed in Spain group on Facebook.
Is anything here professional tax or legal advice?
No. It is orientation and financial education, built carefully and tested hard, but it is still not advice and does not come with a professional's liability behind it. For 100% binding information, talk to a licensed gestor or lawyer.
Can I use your calculations as evidence with Hacienda or Seguridad Social?
Probably not. They are estimates from the figures you typed, and no authority has any reason to accept them. What they are good for is understanding a number, or a letter from the tax office, before you react to it.
Are you affiliated with Seguridad Social, AEAT or any public body?
No, not in any way. We read what they publish, and we link to it.
What happens if a calculation here turns out to be wrong and it costs me money?
We would want to know immediately (please get in touch!!!), we would fix it, and we would say publicly what was wrong and for how long.
We could not, however, compensate you: the site is a tool, not an advisor, and the terms say so.
That is exactly why the sources are on every page and why we keep saying to check a big decision with a professional.
Will future tools and features that you develop also be available in the pro subscription?
Yes - the plan is to grow the list of bite-sized tools like the pricing simulator or the hourly rate calculator, thus adding more and more value to an already very affordable yearly subscription.
Only if we were to develop very very big changes - features that are basically products of their own - we might introduce new pricing options to reflect the value that those products provide.
However, that will never change what you can access with your Pro subscription.
What tools are coming next?
The list changes, so rather than promise here, the newsletter says what landed and what is next.
Can I request a tool or a feature?
Yes please! Requests genuinely do move things up the list. Several tools on the site exist because somebody asked.
How do I report a bug?
Please report them through our feedback form.
Can I link to, embed or reuse your calculators on my own site?
You are welcome to link to anything, freely and without asking.
For embedding and reuse, please contact us and tell us what you have in mind!
