about this tool

When working self employed, it is crucial to realize that your earnings are usually not directly comparable with the income of someone in regular employent.

In employment, a lot of things are calculated into the salary that we don't even notice: paid bank holidays. Paid yearly vacation. Sick days.

Self-employed workers typically do not get these, so they need to be calculated into their hourly rate!

This tool helps new and existing autónomos to roughly calculate a sustainable minimum rate taking these things into account.

It is preset with the number of bank holidays and vacation days that are the legal minimum for employees in Spain.

This tool also works for those who have special arrangements with their client(s), eg paid vacation time or sick time - click on the hints next to each field how to input this correctly.

Do not forget that regular employees enjoy additional advantages that an autónomo does not have: some worker protection, severance pay after long service, unlimited sick days, and a better chance at seeing any money in case the employer becomes insolvent.

These should also be reflected in your hourly rate, but are harder to calculate.

Take these results as a suggestion to inform your decision, and possibly give you some arguments if a client wants to pay you less. But never be limited by the results - the higher your rate, the better. Self-employed life can be tough!

The results will rarely be perfectly correct - there are many many details that the tool cannot cover: tax provisions, region-specific rules, age-specific social security contributions, and more.

For 100% solid numbers that are custom tailored to your exact situation, consult a professional.

Insert here all the income from your autónomo activity (before taxes) in the calendar year you want to do the calculation for.

If you have a regular job and are working as an autónomo alongside (pluriactividad), this tool may not provide accurate results for you.

All your yearly tax-deductible business expenses EXCEPT:

  • - any taxes
  • - social security payments

Remember to include only expenses from your autónomo business, not personal deductions you can apply to your income tax like private health insurance.

Autónomo payments rise yearly, set a couple of years in advance based on a complex negotiation process between state institutions and autónomo lobbying groups.

This is why it is important to choose the correct year for the calculation.

Choose a discount scheme if you know you are eligible for it.

If you're just starting as autónomo for the first time, you're most likely eligible for the first-year 80 Euro flat rate. You can use this tool to calculate your regular contribution after that discount runs out.

These may not be all available discount schemes - if you know of one that you would like to see included, drop me a line!

Results are merely orientative and provided without any warranty. Many special cases are not covered. All calculations have been tested to the best of the author's knowledge, but no guarantee is given in regards to accuracy. Note that there are conditions around how and when you can receive sick pay, paternity pay, and pensions. For definite information, talk to a professional.
